99% pentaerythritol is mainly used in the production of high-end resin coatings, which can improve the hardness, gloss and durability of the coating film. It is also used as a raw material for rosin resin required for paints, varnishes and printing inks, and can be used to produce drying oils, smoldering coatings and aviation lubricants. In addition, it is also used in the production of medicines and pesticides. The pentaerythritol molecule contains four equivalent hydroxymethyl groups and is highly symmetrical, so it is often used as a raw material for producing multifunctional compounds. Pentaerythritol tetranitrate can be obtained by nitration, which is a high explosive; pentaerythritol triacrylate can be obtained by esterification, which can be used as paint. It can also be used as a flame retardant for adhesives, and can be used as an intumescent flame retardant when combined with ammonium polyphosphate. Also used as a cross-linking agent in polyurethane to provide branching within the polyurethane.
